A few weeks back, over drinks with friends in Sydney, the topic turned to Beer vs Whiskey — which one is “stronger”?
Everyone agreed: “Beer is light, yaar. Whiskey, Brandy, Vodka — that’s the real stuff.” And on paper, they were not wrong — beer sits at 4-5% alcohol, while whiskey, vodka, and brandy sit much higher, around 35-42%. Case closed, right?
I said, “Wait a minute. Let’s not close the case yet.”
The Question Nobody Was Asking
Everyone was comparing the percentage. Nobody was comparing the quantity.
Think about it. When you drink whiskey, how much do you actually pour? A peg is usually 30ml, sometimes 60ml if you’re generous. But when you drink beer, you are not sipping 30ml from a shot glass. You are opening a full bottle — 330ml, 500ml, sometimes 650ml.
So the real question is not “which drink has more alcohol in it.” The real question is “which drink puts more alcohol in you.”
And that, my friends, is where the data tells a completely different story.

Let’s Do the Math
Let’s keep it simple and fair. I’ll take a standard 330ml beer bottle at 5% alcohol, and a standard whiskey peg of 30ml at 40% alcohol. And let’s compare 3 beers with 3 pegs — the usual round at any party.
3 Beers (330ml bottles, 5% alcohol)
- Total liquid: 990ml
- Pure alcohol: 990 x 5% = ~49.5ml
3 Pegs of Whiskey (30ml each, 40% alcohol)
- Total liquid: 90ml
- Pure alcohol: 90 x 40% = 36ml
Read that again. Three beers actually put more pure alcohol into your body than three pegs of whiskey. The drink everyone at the table called “light” was quietly doing more damage than the one they were scared of.
And this gap gets even bigger if you go for a stronger beer (8%) or a bigger bottle (650ml, common at Indian parties). At 8% and 650ml, just 2 beers already cross 100ml of pure alcohol — more than what most people drink in 4-5 pegs of whiskey.
Why We Get This Wrong
We get this wrong because we compare labels, not consumption. A whiskey bottle screams “40%” on the label, so our brain files it as dangerous. A beer bottle whispers “5%”, so our brain files it as harmless. But nobody drinks labels. We drink quantities.
This is exactly why looking at data on time matters so much — not just for alcohol, but in life in general. The headline number gives you a feeling. The actual data, when you sit down and calculate it, often gives you the truth. And the truth doesn’t care about your first impression.
It’s Not Just About Drinks
A few days after that conversation, I heard something else that made me pause. Someone said, “Olden days, people used to live so much longer. Now, look at the stress and the food — everyone dies early.”
It sounded true. It felt true. Everyone nods along when someone says this, because we’ve all heard our grandparents talk about “the good old days.”
But is it actually true? I decided to check the data instead of trusting the feeling.
In 1947, when India got independence, the average life expectancy was just around 32 years. Read that again — 32 years. Not because people were somehow weaker, but because of poor healthcare, no vaccines, high infant mortality, and diseases we now easily prevent.
Now look at today. India’s average life expectancy has crossed 70 years, and in a state like Kerala, it is even higher, at around 75-78 years. That is not a small jump. That is people living roughly double the years they used to.
So the story that “people lived longer in the olden days” completely falls apart the moment you look at the numbers. What actually happened is the opposite — we are living much longer today, not shorter. What our grandparents were really talking about was maybe one healthy old relative they remembered, not the average reality of their entire generation. A story, once again, that felt right — until the data stepped in and told us a different one.
The Real Takeaway
Whether it is a beer bottle or a belief passed down for generations, the pattern is the same. Something looks simple and obvious on the surface. Everyone at the table agrees with it. Nobody questions it. And then you sit down with the actual numbers, and suddenly the whole picture flips.
This is why it is so important to pause and look at the data before we accept a story just because it “sounds right” or because everyone around us believes it. Our gut feeling is shaped by a handful of examples we’ve personally seen — one strong grandparent, one wild night out, one impression from childhood. But data is shaped by the full picture, across everyone, over time. That is why it so often tells us a different story than the one we walked in believing.
This isn’t just true for a debate over drinks or a chat about our grandparents. It matters just as much when we make decisions in our own lives — health, money, relationships — and it matters even more inside organizations, where a single wrong assumption, if left unchecked, can quietly shape strategy, budgets, and the future of a whole team.
So the next time a decision feels obvious, pause for a second and ask: what does the data actually say? More often than not, you’ll be glad you checked.
