Delegate and Empower – Are they different?

They are not…. Empowerment takes delegation to the next level that gets you greater results. Leaders play big role in transforming team to a highly empowered team to achieve great outcomes. Let’s look at these closely.

Leaders who delegate tasks effectively manage their time to focus on more strategic initiatives rather than getting bogged down with firefighting and routine tasks. By delegating tasks and empowering team members to make decisions, leaders can tap into a wider range of perspectives and expertise.

When delegating a task, leaders should provide clear instructions on what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, and by when. They should also provide any necessary resources and support, and set clear expectations for the delegated task, including the deadline, deliverables, and quality standards.

Delegation isn’t just about assigning tasks; it’s about empowering your team, fostering growth, and maximizing collective output. These depend on your leadership style, the tasks, and your team’s capability and strength.

How do we empower a team while delegating required tasks? Why should we empower a team?

You need to be involved and also monitor when you delegate a task, to ensure that you are getting the results you expect. If you are confident in your team, you can move to the next level by empowering them to make decisions and take actions. You need to find complementary skills within the team to make them a good team so you can  delegate and empower them to do the job effectively. This gives them the freedom to operate within their area. You may get better ideas and outcomes because they are not limited to your thoughts and instructions. Once you got your confidence with your team, You can then transition to a less monitoring mode and you can use that time to think big and act strategically.

Personally I get extra energy when I feel my leaders are trusting me with a task and giving the freedom to do my own. I always like to work with freedom to think and bring new ideas on to the table.

Below are some points I found useful for empowering the team to do tasks:

Getting to know the team – We need to have a good understanding of the team’s strengths, skills, and capabilities. Periodic one-on-ones with each team member will help you understand their interests and capabilities better.

Communicate goals clearly – Clear and transparent communication of the goals, objectives, and expectations with delegated tasks.

Offer sufficient resources – Enable your team with necessary resources, support, and tools to complete the tasks assigned. Provide guidance, training, and mentorship as needed to help them develop and enhance their skills.

Trust your team – Trust your team to make decisions and own the tasks assigned. Encourage them to bring creativity and take responsibility for the tasks. Empowering team members to make appropriate decisions fosters a sense of ownership, driving motivation and engagement.

Monitor the progress – It is important that you find time to evaluate performance and provide the team with constructive feedback. Identify strengths and areas for improvement, and support and guide them for growth and development.

Appreciate team achievements – Celebrate the achievements and successes of your team when they complete tasks. Make it open and public to cultivate a culture of appreciation and recognition.
